[Pest Management] Fly Control Product Guide

Editor's note: Find out how to tell the difference between common small flies here.

Drain flies, phorid flies and fruit flies — these small pests can become big problems. To help food plants better control small flies, QA has complied a list of the latest products designed to manage these pests. Manufacturers, if your product isn’t listed, please send a press release and photo to Chuck Bowen at cbowen@giemedia.com.

American Bio Systems

DrainGel is a highly concentrated bacterial gel that digests grease buildup that accumulates in drains over time. DrainGel application is easy — it clings to the sides of drains and pipes and can also be easily sprayed under equipment and onto other hard-to-access areas, the company said.

The firm’s BioMop Plus also can be used to clean hard-to-access corners and drains.

Anstar Products

Biozyme is a blend of bacteria that is designed to eliminate the areas where small flying insects breed, the company said. The triple action formula can be sprayed, foamed or added to mop water, making it highly effective at minimizing fruit and drain flies in food manufacturing areas. Biozyme is available in gallons. The new gallon size is great for re-filling quarts and Anstar’s 1-gallon industrial foamer.

B&G Equipment Co.

MicroFoam Professional is a concentrated microbial cleaner for drains and surfaces. The formulation includes a foaming agent for improved coverage and fast microbial action. Mixing at ½ to 1 ounce per quart of water will create a thick, microbe-rich foam in any hand-held or power foamer. This formulation of microbial cleaner can be used with insecticides and IGRs.

DeltaDust, the only 100 percent waterproof dust insecticide available, is ideal for controlling fruit, phorid and sciarid flies that infest food-processing plants, the company said. DeltaDust is labeled for application directly into drains that lead to sewers, a common breeding ground for these flies, or as a spot or crack-and-crevice treatment in both food and non-food areas while the facility is in operation (provided exposed food is covered and/or removed prior to application). With the active ingredient deltamethrin, DeltaDust will remain effective for up to eight months, the company said.

Food Protection Alliance
www.fpalliance.com
Food Protection Alliance is a network of regional companies aligned together to provide national service in areas such as pest management, food safety, preventive techniques, structural and commodity fumigation services and related food-protection services.

The alliance has partners across the United States, Canada and South America. Its mission is to offer advanced technology, professional expertise and quality service to preserve value for its customers and better safeguard the food supply.

Gentrol

Gentrol products are available in three formulations to fit the needs of any Integrated Pest Management program. Gentrol products contain an odorless, non-repellent insect growth regulator (IGR) that targets multiple pests including cockroaches, stored product pests, drain flies and fruit flies. Gentrol products can be used while food processing equipment is still in operation, the company said.

Gentrol disrupts pests’ normal development. The active ingredient,
(S)-Hydroprene, prevents pest larvae from progressing to the adult stage, preventing future infestations.

Gilbert

The Guerrilla is portable, so, with an extension cord, allowing QA professionals to immediately place the trap near the problem. Many flies can be eliminated overnight, providing a more in-depth idea of the problem.
QA professionals can then strategically install a larger, more effective trap from the extensive line of pro flytraps Gilbert has to offer. Or, simply install the Guerrilla on a nearby wall or hang it. All Gilbert insect light traps are UL listed and CSA approved.

Insect-O-Cutor

Protecting product and processes from flying insect contamination, Insect-O-Cutor traps include both scatter-proof glueboards and electrical systems for applications from loading docks to production areas, the company said. Providing simple, effective, energy-efficient, around-the-clock protection, Insect-O-Cutor traps are made in the United States.

Rasco Industries
www.bugblocker.com

Rasco Industries manufactures overhead loading dock screen doors to help companies meet their homeland security and food safety requirements. Developed with AIB to ensure compliance with all the food industry standards for functionality, materials and sanitation/cleaning practices, Rasco overhead screen doors use USDA-tested stainless steel mesh to help keep bugs and intruders out while enabling ventilation, the company said.

Non-chemical pest control and easy wash down help make these products an important component of food safety programs, Rasco said. Bug Blocker doors also are lockable from the inside and include the Overhead Screen Door System, chain link security door, service door screen insert and air inlet screen panel.

Rockwell Labs Ltd
www.rockwelllabs.com

Rockwell Labs Ltd manufactures a complete range of microbial cleaning products to address fly breeding sites, odors and general sanitation in commercial facilities.
