Spectroline
www.spectroline.com
The Spectroline BIB-150P ultraviolet lamp quickly and positively confirms the presence of trace amounts of rodent urine and droppings, oil, grease, dust and other impurities that cause health violations, the company said.
The BIB-150P ultraviolet lamp makes rodent hair and excrement fluoresce brightly. Hair glows blue-white and urine glows yellow-white when dry, bluer when fresh. Other contamination, such as lubrication oils and greases, bleaches and sulfide waste matter fluoresce different colors under the UV lamp.
The BIB-150P delivers super-high UV intensity at an economical price, the company said. Its rugged polymer housing is impact-resistant and dent-proof. The lamp weighs only 3¼ pounds. A unique Built-In-Ballast bulb eliminates the need for a cumbersome, external transformer. The vinyl-coated, stainless-steel wraparound heat guard also acts as a convenient lamp stand.
Advanced Detection Systems
www.adsdetection.com
Advanced Detection Systems’ digital ProScan 1600 uses state-of-the-art DSP technology and offers enhanced sensitivity in wet, dry and conductive products, the company said. A user-friendly touchscreen display allows for easy operation by plant personnel. The detector can be quickly connected to an existing network to monitor performance and log detection events.
The ProScan 1600 metal detector comes standard with all stainless steel washdown construction. Models include conveyor mounted for packaged products, as well as pipeline for liquids and slurries.
Purfresh
www.purfresh.com
Purfresh has released Intellipur, a Web-based software solution that allows water, food storage and transport managers to actively monitor and control the safety and quality of processed water and food in cold storage rooms, wet disinfection and shipping containers.
Intellipur has been added to all of Purfresh’s ozone-based applications, which actively kill food- and water-borne pathogens, control decay and stall food ripening through the use of minute quantities of electrified oxygen, or ozone, the company said. Intellipur uses in-situ sensor arrays that provide real-time monitoring of water, food disinfection, storage and transport conditions. The information is collected by a proprietary software package that issues alerts and reports, creating an auditable data trail and allowing for auditable process control.
For Purfresh’s water and food applications, Intellipur works with ozone-based water disinfection, Purfresh-Cold Storage and Purfresh-Transportation to deliver highly controlled concentrations of ozone. The system significantly kills and controls the spread of waterborne and foodborne pathogens, reduces product loss and improves food quality and safety, the company said.
J.F. Oakes
www.jfoakes.com
J.F. Oakes has announced findings of an independent study designed to prove the effectiveness of XLure Multi-Species Beetle Floor Traps in attracting and capturing Tribolium (flour beetles). In the findings of the study, XLure Multi-Species Beetle Traps had a mean catch efficacy of more than 80 percent of the population of Tribolium in the test area after 24 hours, the company said.
Additionally, the study confirmed the outside slope of the trap was not too steep for Tribolium to climb. Once inside the trap, Tribolium were unable to escape, the company said.
XLure Multi-Species Beetle Floor Traps contain both pheromones and a special food attractant. Pheromones to attract Tribolium (red and confused flour beetles), Lasioderma serricorne (cigarette beetles) and Trogoderma (warehouse and khapra beetles) are loaded in each trap. The special food attractant lures all other beetles, weevils and larvae, including Stegobium paniceum (drug store beetles), Oryzaephilus mercator (merchant grain beetles), Oryzaephilus surinamensis (sawtoothed grain beetles), Sitophilus granaries (grain weevils), Sitophilus oryzae (rice weevils), Sitophilus zeamais (maize weevils) and Rhyzopertha dominica (lesser grain borers).
U.S. Pharmacopeia
www.usp.org/fcc
The Food Chemical Codex allows food manufacturers to comply with rigorous, science-based standards of food quality that have been created by USP to ensure consumer safety.
U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) launched the 6th edition of the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC), a compendium of internationally recognized standards that helps to assure the safety of ingredients in foods produced every day — including preservatives, flavorings, colorings and nutrients.
USP is the official public standards-setting authority for all prescription and over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements manufactured and sold in the United States, and the FCC represents USP’s first step in standards-setting for food safety.
FCC is recognized in law in countries including Canada, Australia, Brazil and most of Latin America; the United States currently does not require foods to meet its (or any compendium’s) standards.
Hardy Diagnostics
www.hardydiagnostics.com
Presumptive results are available for the most common Listeria spp., within 30 hours. Listeria Indicator Broth (SDI-LIB) is intended to be used in the food processing environment on food contact surfaces to detect the presence of Listeria species. Simply swab the surface, add the Listeria Indicator Broth to the sample and incubate. No sub-culturing or specimen transfers are required, which reduces any chance of cross contamination, the company said. A color change from yellow to brown or black is considered presumptive positive.
The Listeria Indicator Broth contains a patented formula of antibiotics, growth enhancers and color changing compounds. The antibiotics function synergistically to inhibit most non-Listeria microorganisms. Growth enhancers provide recovery nutrients to support the growth of sub-lethally injured Listeria. Indicator compounds will turn the broth from yellow to black by utilizing an enzyme produced by Listeria species. A brown or black color after 30 hours at 37° C indicates a presumptive positive test for Listeria spp. The SDI-LIB media recently has earned AOAC approval. The new SDI-LIB provides equivalent or superior recovery and faster detection as low as 10-50 heat injured Listeria monocytogenes organisms per milliliter within 24 to 30 hours of incubation. This testing method is 98 percent sensitive and 99 percent specific, and provides comparable results to the USDA methods, the company said. The SDI-LIB can be used as an economical pre-screen for environmental Listeria instead of performing PCR or other, more-complicated assays on every sample, the company said.
ServiceAccess
www.serviceaccess.com
ServiceAccess introduces ProShield 5000, a patented, EPA-registered concentrate that also is accepted by USDA for use on food contact surfaces, the company said. The concentrate has been found to be effective against an array of microbes, including Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, various Salmonella strains, black mold, athlete’s foot and Influenza A, as well as a host of others, the company said. As an EPA-registered antimicrobial, it must be applied by a licensed pest management professional.
One end of the chemical’s molecule creates a strong bond with a multitude of surfaces, forming a highly durable protective coating. The other end of the molecule forms a microscopic bed of molecular spikes, which puncture microbes. ProShield 5000 physically ruptures the cell walls of these microbes, there are no “super bugs” are created, the company said.
Armstrong International
www.armstronginternational.com
Armstrong International introduces ExpressPack, a multi-tube steam dispersion panel that accepts atmospheric source steam and discharges it into a duct or air handling unit. It is designed with a series of dispersion tubes spaced to provide a shorter non-wetting distance than conventional individual tubes.
The shorter non-wetting distance helps prevent condensation on downstream obstructions, helping simplify design and installation while optimizing performance of the atmospheric source humidifier, the company said.
Mettler-Toledo Safeline
www.mt.com/safelineus
The PipeChek X-ray inspection system detects contaminants in pumped products including liquids, slurries and semi-solid products. Safeline’s PipeChek unit uses low energy X-ray technology for optimal sensitivity to find and automatically reject metal, stone, bone, glass and high-density plastics. It has a full-color touch screen, and meets the American Meat Institute and 3-A Sanitary standards.
