Data Breach Statistics

By Lisa Lupo

The number of U.S. data breaches tracked in 2016 hit an all-time high of 1,093 — a 40% increase over the near-record high of 780 reported in 2015. It is important to note, however, that there could be a question of whether there are more breaches or simply more states making the information publicly available. Either way, the leading types of breaches were:

55.5% Hacking, skimming, phishing attacks — far and away the leading cause with an increase of 17.7% over 2015.

9.2% Accidental email/internet exposure of information.

8.7% Employee error.
