When commercial kitchens have a cockroach infestation, they want to see results fast. To help get those results, using a combination of products is more powerful than using just one.
Cockroach baits and sprays are the two most common treatments used by pest management professionals (PMPs). While both types of treatments have their benefits, PMPs do not have to choose between one or the other. Combining the spraying of harborages with baiting nearby can be a great way to control both the roaches that remain in or close to harborage sites, such as gravid females, as well as those that wander further away to forage.
There are a few things to keep in mind when spraying and baiting together.
Know the Signs of Cockroach Activity
Live roaches are not the only sign of cockroach activity. Dead roaches, egg casings and fecal material are also indicators of a cockroach problem.
Identify your infestation level:
- High: Live roaches found outside of common harborage areas.
- Medium: Large number of roaches (over 50) found in common harborage areas.
- Low: Few roaches (less than 50) found in common harborage areas.
Conduct Surveillance to Find Harborage Sites
Inspect ideal harborage sites such as under sinks, dishwashers, stoves, and behind refrigerators. Although kitchens are prime areas for cockroach harborages, other rooms need to be inspected as well, especially in a heavy infestation.
Glueboards can help you determine if you are close to the harborage area:
- Boards collecting mostly adult cockroaches indicate that you are not close to a harborage area.
- Large numbers of small instars found on a glueboard indicates that you are close to a harborage area.
Baiting High and Low
Dropped ceilings and raised floorings are great hiding spots that often get neglected when baiting. Both high and low areas in the room must be baited to be effective.
