Applied Food Diagnostics has announced a new qPCR diagnostic product line. The Total QC-qPCR line of test kits simultaneously detects the target food pathogens along with the reporter-labeled quality control strain, tagged with green fluorescent protein (GFP). The Total QC-qPCR line is valid for all major food pathogens including but not limited to; E. coli O157:H7, Shiga Toxin producing E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Cronobacter sakazakii and Vibrio Cholerae.

Attendees at the International Association of Food Protection’s IAFP 2021 event in July got an inside look at Bayer’s Rodent Monitoring System. Pest Management and Public Health, a business within the Environmental Science Division of Bayer, showed off the system, which enables food safety professionals to focus on proper inspection and the area of infestation. Features such as 24/7 monitoring, heat mapping and more eliminate the need to spend hours manually checking every trap, Bayer said.

Seward has launched a paddle blender bag that can also be autoclaved. By avoiding the need for double-bagging, trials have shown that the new bags can reduce the amount of plastic waste by 50%, as well as saving time and cost, according to Seward.

The company has estimated that using the new autoclavable Stomacher bag in only one site will save almost $31,000 annually, due to reduced need for materials, and save 1,100 kilograms of plastic each year.

“Using single-use plastic is not only detrimental to the environment, it is costly, and as a business, Seward is always striving for ways to reduce, reuse or recycle wherever possible,” said Stuart Ray, Seward’s technical director.
