The passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act requires that importers manage foreign suppliers for food safety. There are several options for this, including verification activities and ensuring your suppliers are qualified. One way of getting qualified is through recognition of a third-party certification. Vinca helps suppliers comply with increased food safety requirements through an online system that assists in the development of food safety plans and preparation for Food Safety Management Certification. The new product “22000 Project Manager” is accessible via the Internet and guides companies through the requirements and steps to implementation, from initial planning through training, system design, implementation of compliant process, and documentation. A demonstration is available at: http://www.22000-tools.com.

Neogen
www.neogen.com
Neogen Corporation has received Performance Tested Status from the AOAC Research Institute for its new rapid test for detection of dairy antibiotic residues in milk, including ceftiofur. BetaStar Plus (AOAC-RI 021107) detects dairy antibiotic residues in the beta-lactam group (penicillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin, cephapirin, ceftiofur, and cloxacillin), at or below FDA regulatory levels. According to Neogen, the simple dipstick test requires only minimal training and equipment to produce consistently accurate results. BetaStar Plus gives clear results in five minutes, with one line of detection specifically for ceftiofur. Neogen also offers BetaStar Combo, a dairy antibiotic residue test for beta-lactam and tetracycline residues, as well as dairy industry rapid milk allergen tests, rapid foodborne pathogen, and indicator organism tests.
SDIX
www.sdix.com
The RapidChek Select Salmonella enteritidis (SE) test system from SDIX has been reviewed by the FDA and determined to be equivalent in accuracy, precision, and sensitivity to its current standard methods for poultry house environmental drag swabs and pooled egg testing. For pooled egg testing, SDIX’s method is considered by FDA as equivalent to its standard test without a 96-hour-hold period. Recently, SDIX’s test also earned Performance-Tested Methods certification from the AOAC Research Institute, validating the method as equivalent to the FDA methodology for detecting SE in poultry house environments and pooled eggs. With the added FDA equivalency determination, SDIX’s test can help the approximately 3,300 egg producers comply with the new FDA regulations and reduce contamination levels. The FDA Final Rule dictates that if SE is found in the layer environment, eggs must be screened for the presence of SE in order to keep any contaminated eggs from reaching the consumer market. The new testing system is comprised of the RapidChek Select Salmonella Enteritidis detection system for screening environmental drag swabs or pooled eggs and the RapidChek Confirm Salmonella Enteritidis immunomagnetic separation system for confirmation of environmental presumptive positive samples.

Eriez
www.eriez.com
Eriez has produced a video highlighting X-ray use on high speed canning lines and upright non-glass containers, featuring its E-Z Tec XR-SS (Side Shoot) Automatic X-Ray Inspection System. The video, “Inspecting High Speed Canning Lines with X-rays,” is narrated by X-Ray Inspection Systems Product Manager Ray Spurgeon. “In the past, there have been limited options available to scan products on high speed canning lines. However, with today’s X-Ray technology, all that has changed,” Spurgeon said. The video explains how the challenge to inspect and remove bulged, dented, under-filled, and contaminated cans has continually plagued processors. Especially true on canning lines that run at very high speeds, the E-Z Tec XR-SS was designed with this in mind. The video is available at Eriez’ YouTube channel: EriezMarcom.
Bematek

A new in-line multi-component laboratory pilot system for blending multiple streams of fluids and manufacturing homogeneous emulsions, dispersions, and blends is being introduced by Bematek Systems of Salem, Mass. Bematek’s Laboratory Pilot Mixing System for in-line multi-component process development is suitable for blending multiple streams of fluids into homogeneous emulsions, dispersions, and blends. Fully scalable, these wet-mix process systems feature a patented rotor-stator mixing technology which exposes 100% of the mixed product to the same shear action without bypass. Capable of producing dispersions down to one micron, with ± one percent repeatability, depending upon the ingredients and application, Bematek’s Laboratory Pilot Mixing System is FDA, USDA, and 3A compliant. Developed for food and pharmaceutical applications requiring precise control and repeatability, these in-line systems can mix and blend viscous materials from 1.0 CPS and up. Price quotations are available upon request.

3M Food Safety
www.3m.com/foodsafety
3M Food Safety has launched Petrifilm Aqua Plates, available immediately for testing bottled water in beverage and food processing plants. Containing a water-soluble gelling agent, nutrients and indicators, the plates test for the four most common contaminates that threaten product: heterotrophic count, coliform, yeast and mold, and enterobacteriaceae. According to 3M, the sample-ready plates provide an alternative testing process to traditional agar petri dishes; offer a reliable, simple way to assess product safety; and allow producers who make their own agar to experience consistent quality, ease-of-use, and increased productivity, while creating less waste and using less storage space. Results from third-party testing have shown the 3M Petrifilm Aqua Plates to perform similar to global standard methods. An industry study conducted with 292 food processing plants demonstrated an 80 percent increase in technician productivity (tests per hour), saving companies an average of 3.7 hours per day of technician time.
