Pure Bioscience, creator of the patented silver dihydrogen citrate (SDC) antimicrobial, announced the completion of testing of SDC as a processing aid and intervention in the processing of poultry. The testing demonstrated a materially significant reduction in Salmonella contamination, representing a food safety enhancement to current poultry processing. The company is preparing for submission to USDA and FDA, seeking regulatory approval for use of SDC in direct food contact as a processing aid for poultry. A critical issue for the poultry industry in particular is the stubborn persistence of Salmonella through the processing of chicken. The extensive testing and evaluation of SDC for direct decontamination of chicken during processing was conducted by James Marsden, Ph.D., a noted food safety scientist and expert at Kansas State University. The testing evaluated the incorporation of SDC as a component of an integrated food safety system that included existing interventions. The results showed that the combination of treatments has the potential to reduce Salmonella on raw poultry products to levels below the detection limit when SDC is included in the process. An added benefit of using SDC is that it is non-toxic and safe for users (no “off gassing”). Marsden is preparing the submissions for USDA and FDA. Concurrently, he also is conducting similar testing for direct application of SDC in the processing of produce and meats.

CEIA MS-21 Multi-Spectrum metal detectors eliminate the waste and delay of false rejects caused by product effect, yet maintain a high level of sensitivity to all metal contaminants. Using multi-spectrum technology, the CEIA MS-21 provides inspection of high product-effect foods such as fresh meats and spinach, cheese, tortillas, and non-homogeneous products such as multi-product meal kits. Product effect occurs when conductive elements in foods (such as iron, moisture, or salt) alter the electromagnetic field of a metal detector. This simulates the presence of metal when none exists, triggering a false reject of perfectly saleable product. CEIA simultaneously and continuously uses a spectrum of frequencies to differentiate between metal contaminants and product effect conditions with no reduction in metal detection sensitivity. The MS-21 continuously tests and readjusts its detection characteristics to ensure maximum stability and performance, the company said, adding that this process eliminates the need for periodic calibration and ends line arrest and product waste.
Standard features include a single-button preview of detection settings, such as sensitivity level and estimated detection size of ferrous, non-ferrous, and stainless steel metals. IP69K-rated for wash-down protection, CEIA 21-Series metal detectors feature conformal-coated circuit boards for resistance to internal condensation,Bluetooth connectivity for programming and data collection without physically accessing the detector’s interior, Ethernet connection capability, username/password access for multiple users, and compliance with HACCP and FDA Title 21 CFR 11 for traceable inspection event recording and reporting. CEIA also builds single and three-frequency metal detectors for falling, pumped, and conveyed products. For a CEIA demonstration, contact Heat and Control at 800-227-5980 or info@heatandcontrol.com.

BioSafe Systems has added two new products to its portfolio of green and sustainable products for agriculture and horticulture. CalOx, which comes in micronized liquid and wettable powder forms, is intended to raise soil pH and help plants take up nutrients more quickly. The micronized liquid calcium form of CalOx is the next generation of micronized calcium carbonate. It has been milled down to less than one micron in a liquid form, and the wettable powder form is a five-micron product that can be used as an alternative to bagged lime on a variety of crops. BioSafe Systems partnered with a calcium carbonate products provider for the product, with the micronized calcium allowing calcium to be applied as a foliar spray or by injection through subsurface irrigation or chemigated into any type of irrigation system. The small size allows plants to absorb calcium and other micronutrients efficiently. CalOx is available in a variety of container sizes, including 2.5, 5, 55, and 275 gallons.
BioSafe Systems also announced that StorOx 2.0, a bactericide/fungicide, is now registered for use in California. StorOx 2.0 is a post-harvest tool that extends shelf life and reduces spoilage of stored crops, the company said. A chlorine alternative, StorOx 2.0 leaves no residues. It can be used in packing shed and post-harvest applications to kill bacteria, fungi, and their spores, which cause premature decay. StorOx 2.0 also is labeled for hard-surface treatments including sanitization and disinfection of packing and processing equipment, packaging equipment, field equipment, and other post-harvest applications. Listed microorganisms include E. coli, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Staph, Listeria and other gram-positive and negative bacteria.
