CALIFORNIA - Efforts to curb E. coli by California spinach growers have had unintended consequences for soil, rivers, streams and habitats in the state, The Scientific American reports

After a deadly outbreak of E. coli in spinach, a coalition of farmers, growers and producers responded by creating a new set of bacteria-minimizing standards, but researchers have found that the regulations, created in 2006, have not only been ineffective, but have caused ill effects to ecological diversity in the Salinas River Valley, according to news outlet.
