Virtual Event: Fixing the Business of Food

Barilla Foundation to cover this topic on Sept. 22.

WHAT: Coinciding with the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, Barilla Foundation presents “Fixing the Business of Food,” a joint initiative partnering with the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), the Santa Chiara Lab – University of Siena (SCL) and the Columbia Center for Sustainable Investment (CCSI). The event brings together representatives from businesses, institutions, academia, and finance including Chairman of the Barilla Group and Barilla Foundation Guido Barilla, Executive Director UN SDSN Paris Guido Schmidt-Traub, and more for a two-hour dialogue to discuss the necessary actions needed to Fix Food Now.

WHY: Our current food system is not sustainable and does not provide adequate nutrition to everyone on the planet. At the same time, changes to climate threaten the future of farming. While investment in sustainable development and climate action is steadily increasing, only 8% of public climate finance is directed to the sector. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted how intrinsically food, climate change and human well-being are connected. While the food industry, from farm to fork, is increasingly aligning its practices with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement in order to promote its financial, social, and legal sustainability; much more work is needed, particularly in:
•       Business action towards sustainable development
•       Transparency of the action and more detailed reporting systems towards sustainable development
Despite the food industry’s significant efforts; further commitment, action and accountability are needed to transition towards the SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement. This critical cross-sector dialogue intends to re-strategize food systems and accelerate these conversations and increase knowledge of the urgent need for change in the agri-food sector.
