HERCULES, Calif. — Bio-Rad Laboratories, a company specializing in life science research and clinical diagnostics products, announced the launch of XP-Design Assay Salmonella Serotyping Solution, designed for the rapid detection and precise characterization of Salmonella spp. in food and environmental samples.
Salmonella are gram-negative, rod-shaped bacilli that can cause diarrheal illness in humans. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Salmonella is the most frequently reported cause of foodborne illness, with an estimated 1.4 million cases and more than 400 deaths annually in the United States.
Bio-Rad’s assays use real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology to amplify and detect specific DNA sequences of target serotypes using fluorescent probes. Molecular serotyping of Salmonella allows for fast reaction and decision making during an outbreak event and can aid in the monitoring of specific serotypes throughout the food processing plant environment, said Bio-Rad.
The XP-Design Assay Salmonella Serotyping Solution provides a flexible approach to identify Salmonella serotypes after initial screening, said the company. The ready-to-use solution contains oligonucleotides (primers and probes) that are specific to the target serotype, ensuring high specificity and reducing the risk of cross-reaction.
“With XP-Design Salmonella Serotyping Assays, we are setting a new standard for rapid and accurate food safety testing,” said Franck Edouard, senior marketing director, food science division, Bio-Rad Laboratories. “This launch underscores our commitment to providing advanced, reliable tools for detecting and identifying Salmonella, which are crucial for ensuring food safety and consumer confidence.”
